Starting Seed Starting

On Sunday, February 5, the Potomac Overlook Regional Park held its annual Kickoff Event at Arlington Central Library.  Amid jugglers, banjo players, wool spinners, Arlington dignitaries, and more than one hundred local families, Master Gardeners Nancy Dowling and Carol Rosen encouraged visitors to get a jump on the 2012 growing season. Free flower and vegetable seeds proved the big attraction at the MGNV information table, but many visitors also picked up handouts on seed propagation, recommended planting dates, and VCE advice about growing vegetables in containers. Nancy brought her own seed trays to demonstrate that simple materials and proper care can lead to success.

As a reminder, two full workshops are coming up in February to demonstrate how and when to start seeds indoors and transplant the seedlings into your garden. Join Master Gardeners on Feb. 15, 6:30-8:30 PM at Nannie J. Lee Center, Alexandria, and on Feb. 22, 6:30-8:30 PM at Walter Reed Community Center in Arlington. Admission is free, and all gardening types are welcome.
