Tuesday, Oct. 4, Simpson Gardens Stroll –  11 a.m. to noon, at 420 E. Monroe St., Alexandria 22301 (by the YMCA)

VCE Master Gardeners who maintain the Simpson Park Demonstration Gardens will be in the garden to greet visitors, answer gardening questions and describe what’s blooming in the garden. No need to register; just drop by.

Learn the best management practices for growing plants native to our area. VCE Master Gardeners of Arlington and Alexandria will cover the basics of sustainable landscaping practices that make the most of available water, improve soil health and reduce maintenance. Advance registration requested. 


Saturday, Oct. 22, Sustainable Landscaping Workshop –  9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Walter Reed Community Center, 2909 S. 16th St., Arlington 22204

This 4-hour workshop will cover the basics of sustainable landscape management as well as best management practices for environmental landscaping. It will cover native plant selection, invasive plant management, and techniques to minimize stormwater runoff and urban heat island effects.  Free and open to the public. Advance registration requested. sis

This workshop offers easy and fun ideas for making gifts using your dried herbs, including how to make herbal soaps in a crockpot .Advance registration requested.
