2014 VCE Programs in May

Series of Wednesday evening programs on Urban Gardening, May 7, 14, 21, and 28, 7 to 9 p.m., Arlington Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy St., Arlington. This series, taught by Arlington Food Assistance Center volunteers and VCE Master Gardeners, is designed to teach gardening skills to a wide audience.

Topics by date:

  • May 7: Garden Structures & Vertical Gardening (giveaways: seeds, seedlings);
  • May 14: Herbs and Herb Container Gardens (nibbles);
  • May 21: No Room? No Problem―Growing Food in Small Spaces;
  • May 28: Edible Landscaping (including perennial vegetables).

Wednesday, May 14—Urban Agriculture: Vegetable Gardening 101, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Arlington Mill Community Center, 909 S. Dinwiddie St., Arlington 22204. Join VCE Master Gardeners and Horticultural Agent Kirsten  Buhls to learn the basics of seed  starting, soil preparation, and when and where to plant. Saturday, May 17—Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia Plant Sale, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Space # 13, Green Spring Gardens, 4603 Green Spring Rd, Alexandria. Shady perennials, sunny perennials, natives and more. Grown in the gardens of Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners and in VCE Demonstration Gardens in Arlington and Alexandria.

Thursday, May 22—Composting for Home Gardeners, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Fairlington Community Center, 3308 S. Stafford St., Arlington. Basic instructions and information on how to start composting at home, what to put in a compost pile, how to maintain it so the materials break  down properly, and how to make good use of finished compost. To register, call 703-228-6414 or e-mail mgarlalex@gmail.com.
