DESCRIPTION:Is your fig tree overgrown? Is it so messy and bulky you can no longer harvest the fruit? Or would you like to start a new fig tree? Fig trees require special pruning techniques to help them thrive and fruit abundantly. As Master Gardeners who have a passion for figs we can help you explore strategic pruning for size\, shape\, productivity\, or all three. Best timing for initial pruning and specific follow-up strategies will be demonstrated and discussed. In addition\, following the pruning we will have a rooting demonstration. Attendees will have the opportunity to take home a cutting to create their own Fig Tree. Dress for the weather\, bring your hand tools\, gloves and your enthusiasm. \n\n\n\nThis class is full. We are offering a second class on Saturday\, March 14 at 1 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\nFicus tree in need of pruning. DESCRIPTION:Winter is an excellent time to prune many trees and shrubs. Learn why and how to prune to remove crossing and rubbing branches\, suckers\, water sprouts\, and damaged wood. Discover the best practices for reducing shrub size\, trimming hedges\, and carefully removing larger limbs. The results will be trees and shrubs with healthier and fuller growth\, better flowers and fruit\, and a more attractive home landscape. Join Extension Master Gardeners for a hands-on class in basic pruning techniques. Dress for the weather\, bring your tools. \n\n\n\nThis class is limited to 25 people and we have 15 people registered so far. Our registration system has stopped working. Learn more about the principles behind potting soil\, the components they are made of\, and tips for plant care in potting soil.\n\n\n\n\n\nMarch 25 – Container Gardening: You don’t need a yard to grow your own herbs and vegetables. Find out how container gardening can work for you.\n\n\n\nApril 8 – Preventing Food Waste: (Meet in Wilson Room) Food is grown to feed people. Whether purchased or received as a donation\, the highest and best use of food is for it to be eaten. Join us for a conversation to discuss the importance of preventing food from being wasted. Why it matters and how to balance tradeoffs among haste\, taste\, and waste.\n\n\n\nApril 15 – Pepper-licious!: Peppers—hot and sweet—are the 7th most popular vegetable in the world. This talk will focus on growing delicious peppers of your own this summer. You will learn how to: select those that suit your needs; plant and nurture your peppers; and identify pests and diseases common to peppers.\n\n\n\nMay 6 – Herbs- Planning\, Planting: Fresh herbs can take your cooking from good to great. There are herbs for all cuisines and growing conditions. Which will you grow? How do you grow them? Where do they fit with your vegetables?\n\n\n\nMay 20 – Gardening Structures: Easy-to-build garden structures help you save garden space\, grow healthier plants\, bring higher yields\, and control those pesky varmints.\n\n\n\nJune – 3 – TBA\n\n\n\nJune 17- Weed Control by Design: Mulch\, Groundcovers and Cover Crops: Improve your soil and decrease weed pressure by exploring ways to keep the ground covered. DESCRIPTION:Get ready for Earth Day and Arbor Day at the annual Spring Celebration and Plant Sale at the Glencarlyn Library Community Garden. An abundance of nature-related activities and products will be available. Small Trees Make Big Canopies will be giving away saplings during the event and there will paper crafts and other kids’ activities. Stock up on native plants from Hill House Nursery and plants propagated from the Library Garden. Items for sale include hand-made ceramics and jewelry\, recycled bags\, floral boxes & cards\, and used books from the Friends of Arlington Libraries. The oldest house in Arlington\, the Ball-Sellers House\, will be open to visitors. Representatives from Northern Virginia Bird Alliance Wildlife Sanctuary Program and Arlington Regional Master Naturalists as well as Extension Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions. All proceeds will support Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia.
