Tried and True Native Plant Selections
for the Mid-Atlantic
Print Version (Legal Size):
Hamamelis virginiana (Witch Hazel)
In 1994, the American Forestry Association recorded the largest Witch Hazel tree at 34.8 feet high in Bedford, Virginia. The last native* shrub to bloom in autumn, its fragrant, yellow, spider-like flowers illuminate the landscape as leaves fall. Fruit matures the second season. The Virginia Native Plant Society named Witch Hazel as Wildflower of the Year in 2002.
*Though common throughout much of the Mid-Atlantic Region, in Virginia’s Coastal Plain, Witch Hazel is infrequent but widespread.
