Heliopsis helianthoides ([Smooth] Oxeye)
Sometimes referred to as False Sunflower, this hardy native* of open woodlands, prairies, and fields is notable for its eight-week period of peak bloom. Its 2- to 3-inch, showy yellow flowers attract a wide variety of pollinators and make it a wonderful addition to a cutting garden.
*Heliopsis helianthoides var. helianthoides is native to DC and rare in DE. It has been reported mostly in MD’s Carroll and Howard counties and is present throughout PA. In VA, it is frequent to common in the mountains, infrequent in the Piedmont, and rare in the Coastal Plain. You can view the VA counties in which it has been reported here.
