Hydrangea arborescens (Wild or Smooth Hydrangea)
Wild Hydrangea is a fast-growing shrub with large handsome leaves and large, flat to dome-shaped heads, comprising hundreds of small fertile flowers, sometimes edged with showy, sterile flowers. It is common throughout much of the Mid-Atlantic Region* except for the Coastal Plain.
*It is native to DC. In DE, it is rare to extirpated in the Piedmont and absent in the Coastal Plain. It is scattered in MD and is present throughout PA. In VA, it is common in the mountains and Piedmont and infrequent in the Coastal Plain.You can view the VA counties in which it has been reported here.
