Tried and True Native Plant Selections for the Mid-Atlantic
Commercially valuable as a food crop, this species yields the best blueberries and autumn color when grown in full sun. Due to widespread hybridization, its distribution in Virginia has been difficult to map.*
*It is native to DC, but rare in DE and MD. It is present throughout PA. In VA, it is apparently frequent in the southern half of the mountains, infrequent in the northern mountains, and rare in the north Piedmont and north Coastal Plain. In NoVA, it is found in Arlington and Fairfax counties. You can view the VA counties in which it has been reported here.
