The Plant Clinic at Arlington Central Library is staffed by VCE Master Gardeners, who answer general gardening questions as well as questions about pests and diseases and plant identification. They also provide free soil test kits on request. The clinic is located in the East Lobby of the Library.
There is a broad world of basils out there – different varieties, flavors, leaf sizes, and colors. Basils are important to many different cultures around the globe – beautiful garden basils; pollinator-attracting basils; and basils grown for function, for fragrance, and even for bouquets. Extension Master Gardeners Kathryn Kellam and Susan Wilhelm will introduce you to a wider world of basils and explain how to care for, harvest, use, and preserve exciting new basils as well as familiar favorites.
Meet and support your Extension Master Gardeners as they join many other vendors at the Green Spring Gardens Big Plant Sale. We have beautiful and unusual plants, including many Virginia natives, to fill your spring gardening needs. Extension Master Gardeners will be on hand to help with plant selection, answer your questions and offer gardening advice. In addition there will be artists, food vendors and bake sales.

Kids are invited to learn how to Plant a Pizza Garden in a Pot, Sunday, May 22, 10:30-11:00 am.
Children will learn how to plant cherry tomatoes, Mad Hatter peppers, snow cloud onions, and oregano/basil herbs in a 5-gallon pot. A free herb plant to start a pizza garden will be given to each child’s family. Open to ages 5-10. Offered by Extension Master Gardeners.
Due to space limitations, participants are limited to 15 kids – first come, first served.
June is Pollinator Month! During the month of June our weekly education focus will be interesting and fun facts about pollinators, how you can protect them, and the benefits of native plants. National Pollinator Week is June 20 to June 26. Did you know that Pollinator Week is celebrated all over the world?
Summer pruning helps you to improve overall structure and size of your woody plants or boost fruit and flower production in fruit trees and shrubs. Extension Agent Kirsten Conrad will walk you through the how, when, and why to do summer pruning on hedges, multi-stem shrubs, small trees and perennial ornamentals. With these best practices, your pruning will result in healthier and fuller growth, better flowers and fruit, and more attractive landscaping.
This event has two components: 1) a self-guided tour of homes, gardens, and community spaces ($5 per person), and 2) a free community celebration at Shirlington Library with exhibits focused on sustainability and family-friendly fun. The self-guided Green Community Tour features various homes and community spaces with energy-efficient technologies, watershed-friendly gardens, food and flower gardens, wildlife habitats, native plants, natural play features, and more.
