Class Description
Wondering what to plant when the weather starts to cool? Consider carrots, leafy greens, or garlic for starters. Join Extension Master Gardener Molly Newling to learn what to plant when, and simple tips for success. Molly discusses inexpensive techniques to extend your harvest and ways to enjoy some of your crops in the dead of winter. She also discusses how to select and plant winter cover crops to improve your soil for next year.

2024 Gleaning Is Open – Sign Up Today

Want to pick pounds of plump potatoes, beautiful beans, and superior squash?
Well you’re in luck! The Plot Against Hunger Glean Teamis ready for the 2024 season. In 2023 the Glean Team harvested and donated over 22 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables! You can help us pick even more this year. We head out to area farms approximately 40 minutes from Arlington early on Tuesday mornings, pick the produce of the day and deliver our harvest to our pantry and feeding program partners in Arlington by noon. (Thursdays are reserved for rain days and extra harvest days.) In addition to pickers, we welcome volunteers with large vehicles who can help transport harvests. If you haven’t already, be sure to create a volunteer profile on the FOUA site to easily sign up for dates in August and September.
Listen to a recent piece about gleaning on WAMU, with a shout out to FOUA and Plot Against Hunger at the end.
Does your employer offer community service hours? Looking for a great activity for your office partners, college sports team, or community group? If you’re interested in getting your team out to glean, email volunteer@arlingtonurbanag.org.
