Organic Vegetable Garden (OVG), May 30th:
The previous week in the organic vegetable garden we have been finding many, many slugs happily feeding on our lettuce, broccoli, strawberries and the many seedlings that are just coming up. They seem to be thriving as a result of the recent rain, not to mention the abundant food we are providing them. Our approach to slug control is to clean out areas where there is debris, such as our strawberry bed, and applying diatomaceous earth and even crushed eggshells around plants since slugs avoid crawling over rough surfaces. We also remove them by hand when we find them—it is up to you what you want to do with them at that point.
