TREE: Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip-Poplar, Tuliptree)
Tried and True Native Plant Selections for the Mid-Atlantic
Common throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region, Tuliptree is aptly named from the shape of its flowers and leaves to the samara whorls persisting like wooden tulips until spring. It is an excellent shade or ornamental tree for a large property, sited best on lower or concave slopes. It was the favorite tree of Mr. President and the First Lady, bald eagles that nested 80 feet high in a Tulip-Poplar in the U.S. National Arboretum.
Invasive Plant Video: Periwinkle
The Glencarlyn Library Community Garden coordinators are creating a new series of short videos about locally invasive plants and native alternatives. This series looks at individual invasive plants, discussing how to remove them and suggesting native plants to consider as replacements. This month's post is on Periwinkle(vinca minor).
GROUND COVER: Silene caroliniana (Wild Pink)

This charming wildflower is native to dry forests, barrens, and outcrops throughout Virginia where it tolerates a range of soils. Its rose-pink flowers, which somewhat resemble those of phlox, bring bright color to the spring garden, and it remains evergreen in winter.

Philodendrons make great houseplants, which is why you’ll find so many different varieties in the houseplant section of your favorite garden center. They can live quite happily in our indoor spaces and even put on some impressive growth while still being one of the easiest plants to care for in our homes.

This native member of the Rose Family has four-season interest from showy, fragrant spring blooms to a distinctive winter silhouette. It has high wildlife value, attracting a wide variety of pollinators, serving as the host plant for many Lepidoptera, and providing support to birds.
