Although native to the southeastern United States, Oakleaf Hydrangea can be at home in many Mid-Atlantic landscapes. In late spring, white flowers bloom in showy pyramidal panicles, aging to pink in summer. Large, oak-like leaves display a variety of brilliant colors in fall.

Noted for beautiful golden fall color, this long-lived keystone plant hosts numerous moth species and feeds and shelters many types of animals. The species epithet “tomentosa” refers to the hair-covered undersurfaces of its leaflets, a characteristic that makes the tree easily identifiable.
