Tried and True Native Plant Selections
for the Mid-Atlantic
Print Version (Legal Size):
Ceanothus americanus (New Jersey Tea)
This compact shrub is indigenous to woodland edges, prairies, and roadsides throughout much of the Mid-Atlantic.* Although somewhat slow to establish, its extensive root system, drought tolerance, and ability to fix nitrogen make it an excellent choice for challenging garden sites. The Virginia Native Plant Society selected New Jersey Tea as Wildflower of the Year for 2019.
*It is native to DC, scattered counties in MD, and throughout PA. It is very rare in Delaware. In VA, it is frequent in the mountains and Piedmont and widespread in the Coastal Plain.
